WHO IS GAIUS?

The third epistle of John was specifically written for Gaius, someone who really helpful for the church. John wrote: “Beloved, you do faithfully whatever you do for the brethren and for strangers, who have borne witness of your love before the church 3Jn.1:5-6.”

Back to those days, the great persecution was everywhere, and the disciples were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria Ac.8:1, but they fervently preached the Gospel even to the end of the earth accomplishing the great commandment from Jesus Ac.1:8. They just lived with basic needs but then Gaius equipped them. John wrote: “If you send them forward on their journey in a manner worthy of God, you will do well, because they went forth for His name’s sake, taking nothing from the Gentiles 3Jn.1:6-7.”

Gaius might not go everywhere else and just stayed where he lived, but truly he was the good fellow worker of the Kingdom of God because he received and equipped those who worked for God. John continued: “We therefore ought to receive such, that we may become fellow workers for the truth 3Jn.1:8.” Jesus also explained the same thing when He said: “He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward. And he who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward. And whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, assuredly, I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward Mat.10:41-42.” God sometimes may send us to go somewhere for His name’s sake, and at the other time God may want us to be like Gaius. Whatever task we may have, let us be good and faithful God’s fellow workers 1Cor.3:9.

SIAPAKAH GAYUS?

Surat Yohanes yang ketiga secara khusus ditulis untuk Gayus, seorang yang sangat menolong bagi gereja. Yohanes menulis: “Saudaraku yang kekasih, engkau bertindak sebagai orang percaya, di mana engkau berbuat segala sesuatu untuk saudara-saudara, sekalipun mereka adalah orang-orang asing. Mereka telah memberi kesaksian di hadapan jemaat tentang kasihmu 3Yoh.1:5-6.”

Pada masa itu, penganiayaan yang hebat terjadi di mana-mana, dan semua murid tersebar ke seluruh daerah Yudea dan Samaria Kis.8:1, namun mereka dengan berapi-api memberitakan Injil bahkan sampai ke ujung bumi menggenapkan amanat agung dari Yesus Kis.1:8. Mereka hanya hidup dengan kebutuhan yang sangat mendasar namun kemudian Gayus memperlengkapi mereka. Yohanes menulis: “Baik benar perbuatanmu, jikalau engkau menolong mereka dalam perjalanan mereka, dengan suatu cara yang berkenan kepada Allah. Sebab karena nama-Nya mereka telah berangkat dengan tidak menerima sesuatupun dari orang-orang yang tidak mengenal Allah 3Yoh.1:6-7.”

Gayus mungkin tidak pergi kemana-mana dan hanya tinggal di tempat dia berada, namun sebenarnya dia adalah rekan sekerja yang baik dari Kerajaan Allah karena dia menerima dan memperlengkapi mereka yang bekerja untuk Allah. Yohanes melanjutkan, “Kita wajib menerima orang-orang yang demikian, supaya kita boleh mengambil bagian dalam pekerjaan mereka untuk kebenaran 3Yoh.1:8.” Yesus juga menjelaskan hal yang sama ketika Dia berkata: “Barangsiapa menyambut seorang nabi sebagai nabi, ia akan menerima upah nabi, dan barangsiapa menyambut seorang benar sebagai orang benar, ia akan menerima upah orang benar. Dan barangsiapa memberi air sejuk secangkir sajapun kepada salah seorang yang kecil ini, karena ia murid-Ku, Aku berkata kepadamu: Sesungguhnya ia tidak akan kehilangan upahnya dari padanya Mat.10:41-42.” Allah kadangkala mengirim kita untuk pergi ke suatu tempat karena nama-Nya, dan di lain waktu Allah mungkin menginginkan kita menjadi seperti Gayus. Apapun tugas yang kita miliki, marilah kita menjadi kawan sekerja Allah yang baik dan setia 1Kor.3:9.
