Daily Bible Reading: Luke 9:37-62, Psalms 119:1-88

DIAGNOSING THE SPIRIT

The disciples remembered exactly what Elijah the prophet did in the past and they just wanted to imitate how Elijah commanded the fire to come down from heaven and consume the wicked people. But Jesus turned and rebuked them, and said, “You do not know what manner of spirit you are of. For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them Luk.9:55-56.”

Jesus explained how we are not allowed to just imitate what we read in the Bible while the spirit is different! Having the right spirit is the important key to walk in the same miraculous experience that we had read in the Bible, otherwise we might end up in the wrong way Pro.16:25. For example, we can’t just imitate Solomon and praying for wisdom while we don’t have the same heart that desiring wisdom to discern between good and evil 1Ki.3:9.

We must have the right spirit just like what Jesus said, which is to save men’s lives. Jesus loved the Samaritans even though they didn’t receive Him. Jesus rebuked James and John with a quick and sharp diagnose for their wrong spirit. Later, John understood the importance of diagnosing the spirit and he wrote: “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God 1Jn.4:1.” Let’s pray and ask the Holy Spirit to do a deep diagnose within our spirit so that we can have the same heart just like Jesus, a heart to save men’s lives.

MEMERIKSA ROH

Para murid ingat persis apa yang dilakukan nabi Elia di masa lalu dan mereka ingin meniru bagaimana Elia memerintahkan api turun dari langit dan membinasakan orang-orang yang jahat. Akan tetapi Yesus berpaling dan menghardik mereka dan berkata, “Engkau tidak tahu roh macam apa yang ada padamu. Karena Putra Manusia tidak datang untuk membinasakan kehidupan manusia, tetapi untuk menyelamatkannya Luk.9:55-56 (KJI).”

Yesus menjelaskan bahwa kita tidak diperbolehkan meniru apa yang dibaca di Alkitab sementara rohnya berbeda! Memiliki roh yang benar adalah kunci penting untuk berjalan di dalam pengalaman yang luar biasa sama seperti yang telah kita baca di Alkitab, tanpa roh yang benar, kita dapat berakhir di ujung jalan yang salah Ams.16:25. Sebagai contoh, kita tidak dapat hanya meniru Salomo berdoa meminta hikmat sementara kita tidak memiliki hati yang sama yang merindukan hikmat untuk membedakan antara yang baik dan yang jahat 1Raj.3:9.

Kita harus memiliki roh yang benar seperti yang Yesus katakan, yaitu menyelamatkan nyawa manusia. Yesus mengasihi orang Samaria meskipun mereka tidak menerima-Nya. Yesus menegur Yakobus dan Yohanes dengan diagnosa yang cepat dan tajam terhadap roh mereka yang salah. Di waktu selanjutnya, Yohanes memahami pentingnya menguji roh dan dia menulis: “Saudara-saudaraku yang kekasih, janganlah percaya akan setiap roh, tetapi ujilah roh-roh itu 1Yoh.4:1.” Mari berdoa dan memohon Roh Kudus untuk melakukan pemeriksaan yang teliti di dalam roh kita supaya kita dapat memiliki hati yang sama seperti Yesus, hati untuk menyelamatkan nyawa manusia.
